about

It could seem predictable to mention freedom in the work of three improvisers. But the freedom in “Note dei tempi”, out on September 15th for Auand Records, is conquered bar after bar: every composition is firmly fastened to complex, daring rhythmic structures for the musicians to unravel again and again, bringing the core of their musicality back. Furthermore, this happens over a dialogue between three people, playing with distant music traditions and timbers – thus adding up to the many meanings of freedom.

Behind its fresh, flexible name, Quilibrì connects Andrea Ayace Ayassot’s soprano saxophone, Enrico Degani on acoustic guitar and Claudio Riaudo on percussion. «The compositions – Ayassot says – are always conceived as areas to move in: they suggest a possible rhythmic or melodic order, and are simple though unusual: instead of the harmonic progressions, the notes follow Hindustani ragas or interval combinations. Every melodic interval appears in its polyrhythmic value. They help identify consonance areas that are unheard of».

In these consonance areas that are unheard of, the trio gathers to either plot a sparkling unpredictable conversation (‘Molla’, ‘Stilla d’Aponia’) or patiently build a layered reflection (‘Limpido Mistero’). While the opening track is a very personal tribute to Italian jazz master Franco D’Andrea, the other Ayassot-penned ten tracks are a window open on Ayassot’s bright creativity as an explorer of the strong communication power of a soprano saxophone, especially when at the service of his fellow musicians; on the fresh timbers of Riaudo’s percussion, wrapping up knotty rhythms in an inviting sound packaging; and on Degani’s fitting intuitions, massively expanding the trio’s array of possible routes.
